I started collecting these as I was fascinated by the wide range of designs that kept appearing on ebay. No one else wanted them so most of these have been bought for a song. They are so common that every house in Australia must have had a pair stuck on their wall in the 50's and 60's. Now sadly they are unloved and unwanted - probably appropriate commentary on the reconciliation process of the past decade or so.. As the collection builds I have begun to get intrigued how Aboriginals have been portrayed - some are quite realistic but the most popular ones are definitely Europeanised in appearance. In addition you usually find these plaques circulating in pairs - nice Christian nuclear families waiting to be conceived? Why no children? Why very few females on their own - if they all started as couples what happened to the females - If they did produce and sell males and females separately why are the males more common? So many questions - HELP!
