Q.

Hi, my name is Emma Smith and I am trying to find out information for my mum who has a Kalmar piece that I can not find any comparison too at all. She has a wall hanging set consisting of three flying seagulls with Kalmar FS, 1, 2 and 3 stamped on the bottom. I have managed to find out that Irene Kalmar was the artist and who the Kalmar’s were. I have also found a number of examples on the internet but nothing like my mum has. Any information would be greatly appreciated. My mum has been having trouble tracking down any information about her particular piece.

Q.

Greetings. Very new to this. We have moved into an apartment and I need to cull some of my collections. I think I must part with my collection of Egg Coddlers as I do not have the room. Can anyone out there give me an idea as to whether they are saleable or should I just take them to the nearest op-shop?

Q.

Not so much a question as a comment for ochre (above) I picked up what sounds to be a very similar plate to yours in an op-shop this morning for $2.25.....thought it was interesting that it was signed so started Googling about....pretty pleased to see it mentioned within minutes!

Q.

We are selling our collection of willow decorated items. It comes in many shapes, colours, linen, tins and many more unusual items. We have 1200 or more items for sale. Would like someone to take the lot as we are elderly and downsizing. We live in Merbein/Mildura area Vic. Is there a dealer out there who would buy thelot or collate an advertisement to mail to dealers or other collectors. It is a real bother. Need to have it gone ASAP. A good deal is displayed in an 18' x 8' cabinet that can be dismantled and rebuilt. We need help. posted for:

KOALA pottery.Has anyone heard of it,I have uploaded a pic in what is this section.I can;t seem to upload pics to my collection though.I maybe doing something wrong

[Roses   06/08/2011]
A. Hi, Koala pottery is from Sydney and started in 1944 to about 1963 according to Geoff Ford's book on Australian pottery. Mr Kerslake set up the pottery and they had a range of logo's from a round blue ink stamp to a gum leaf shape with light blue ink on dark blue paper. Later on they also inscribed directly onto the items which range from slip case vases, troughs, lamp bases and pots. Some early ones were spray decorated with abstract designs. The one I own is a lamp base with a shape the same as Diana Ware in tans and greens from the 1950's or so with a gum leave sticker. cheers, grottypots.

Q.

Hi, I would appreciate any help in identifying and valuing a dessert service containing 12 x 24cm diameter handpainted plates with artists initials (LB, sometimes looks like CB) on the front and title on the back on Wedgwood blanks, plus an accompanying 2 x dessert platters 23cm diameter x 14.5cm high (deep plate on a raised pedestal) and 2 x shorter dessert platters 22.5cm diameter x 7cm high).  Each painting is a postcard sized landscape, mostly from around Sydney, 2 from Tasmania and accentuated by a floral (Australian) botanical specimen around ?half of the outer edge.  C1885-87.  I'll upload photographs as well.

Does anyone have any clues as to who the artist might be? Or what this dessert service may be worth?

Many thanks!

Q.

I have been given what looks to be a soap dish with 'in an old world garden' pattern on it. I am wondering what it would be valued at as I am having a sale to raise money for charity andIi need to be able to price it realistically. It has Sandland Ware written on the back with the two hands clasped and underneath Lancaster and Sandland Ltd Hanley Staffordshire England. Also has what looks like a gold tick on the back as well. I would appreciate any wisdom on this! Thanks

[cplatt   10/11/2010]
A. The value of any piece depends upon condition and rarity. Sandland Ware as a whole was everyday gift ware. A soapsh/ashtray/butterdish would start on ebay somewhere around $10-15 dollars.

Q.

just about prices of english ceramics going down a lot mainly because of the internet, for example i go to many live auctions in perth, they have trouble selling modern moorcroft for anything over 500 dollars, looked at same bits on ebay they sell between 2-300 dollars, that moorcroft at these auctions they want 900 bucks plus talking 30cm high, also royal doulton struggles to sell plates sell for 30 bucks each, last auction a clarice cliff secrets large bowl mint condition sold for 350 bucks feel sorry for people who bought moorcroft pieces at retail prices, cant get a third of what they paid for it,just saw on ebay a moorcroft limited edition of 150 pieces about 10 years old sold for 300 aussie dollars, any feedback on live auctions on east coast would be appreciated, apparently good ceramics gets better prices in sydney, etc same for sterling silver, here in perth there selling 100 year old hallmarked pieces for 20-50 bucks any feedback would be welcome

Q.

I have a carlton ware cream jug passed down to me and i'm interested to know the value.

This jug is of hollyhocks pattern with a gold handle and trim around the top of the jug the pattern background is blue/green. The jug stands no more than 3inches and has what i would describe as a beehive shape, not straight up and down. the base of the jug has the carlton ware trade mark is made in England and has the numbers ./7472  3819painted on with what looks like the nuber 787 embosssed in the glase. It also has a gold w  painted. Sorry no photo but the jug is in mint condition.

Anybody able to help with a value?

Q.

I am wantng to find any information about a Shelley trio set I have. It is black with a purple grape and white leaf design at the top of the cup and around plate edges. It also has some green and spots in a pattern on the very outer edges. I am currently missing a cup (I have two sets) and would be very interested in pruchasing  a cup to complete the set. Plus any more or this design. I would dearly love to find out more information as I believe it is quite old and maybe rare.

[Donna Douglas   15/06/2010]
A. If the backstamp has "Shelley China" in a shield with "Made In" above the shield and "England" below that will be dated 1912-1925 If it has Shelley in the shield and "England" below it will be 1925-1945 If it has Shelley in the shield "Fine Bone China" above and "England" below it will be 1945-1965 I would need the cup shape and possibly a pattern number to give you more info. I photo would be great.

A. Hi Porthos, I worked at Pates Pottery in the fifties if I saw a photo of your vessel I might be able to tell you a bit about it. Regards Marie
[Marie   09/07/2010]
A. Best place to find a value is either ebay or Oztion, both have a good range of pottery and you type in Pates to the search function and see if there is anything similiar to yours. If not this week there will probably be something similiar next, I have seen just about every kind of pottery go through these 2 sites. Good Luck.

Q. Hi I have a set of Royal Winton globe jugs in three graduating sizes in the Julia design. They were a wedding gift ot my parents in 1951. Two of the jugs have a small chip on the pouring lip. I would like to know how to get them repaired and also have them valued.

Q. Hi to all, does anyone out there know much about a potter called Kevin Brereton? I know he had a gallery in Brunswick Head NSW in the 1970's & passed away in Canberra in 2008. I have a couple of his works.
[Flash   17/11/2009]
A. Geoff Ford (Encyclopedia of Australian Potters' Marks) says that he was born in 1933, and trained then taught at Prahan Technical College, Melbourne, before operating a studio at New Brighton, NSW, from 1962-1979. He signed his works with the painted name 'Brereton'.

Q. I have just bought a teapot from an op shop that looks amazing, it's black with Chinese paper lanterns on it hanging from bamboo leaves, it's blue inside and has "Crown Ducal Ware England RdNo706201 and other little squiggles including 8 and what seems to be a signature. I really need someones help because i am new to collection.
[SillyTeapot   04/11/2009]
A. Crown Ducalware was made byA.G Richardson & Co Ltd, Gordon Pottery, Tunstall, England. If the mark on your teapot has a crown above it... that is 'Crown Ducal Ware England' with a crown above it would be dated c. 1925. Sounds like a lovely piece. I am not familiar with Crown Ducal prices but I would take a rough guess at $100 plus. Happy Collecting!

A. Hi - do you still have the McHugh pieces available?
[geoffisaac20   11/08/2010]
A. Hi there, just went to an auction where they tried to sell a few mchugh vases, very big but they were passed in,couldnt even get a 100 dollar bid to start with, even on ebay they sell very cheap, doesnt even matter how big they are.I've even noticed the price of pottery like remued on ebay go down a mile,30cm tall pieces selling for 125 dollars on ebay, even the gumleaf remued is not even selling on ebay, most of the people selling on ebay are dealers, pottery is worth what someone is prepared to pay.I collect clarice cliff but thats even gone down in price a lot

Q. Hi everyone, My grandmother entrusted her collection of plates to me with a request to sell them to "someone who would appreciate them". If anyone's interested, they're all international, limited edition plates that are the first in their series. Alternately, if anyone can suggest a good place to sell seven collector plates... it would be appreciated. If you want to make an offer or want more information on any of the plates (they're listed in my bower) just email me (if you can do that through this website... I know I put my email address down when I registered) or post a reply to this question. Thanks! Lauren

Q. Hi there. I have inherited a large Beswick 1940s vase, but somebody has painted it with white house paint! Is there a safe way of removing the coat of paint and restoring the vase to its former glory without damaging the vase??
[rosegarden56   03/05/2009]
A. Hi, whether your paint is oil or acrylic soaking in hot water will soften it and enable you to peel or rub it off. A little good quality dishwashing detergent in the water should help. After removing what you can this way stubborn paint - if acrylic - will respond to Methylated Spirits, and neat eucalyptus oil mixed with a little meths may aid removal of residual oil paint - depending on what vintage the oil paint is. Good luck from Cossii
[Cossii   08/09/2009]
A. Hi Cooka here, I have had a similar problem with a glazed vase and solved it by first soaking the vase overnight in water. I then gently rubbed the paint away with a MILD scourer dipped in soapy water to which I added a few drops of eucalyptus oil. It takes patience. The paint was acrylic based. If your vase has matt/pitted surface and/or the paint is oil based this method may not work. Good luck.

Q. Hi, I was given two plates, 1 has Jule after 1968 written on the front and a church at christmas scene predominantly blue with white on it. On the back it has 'B&G Kjobenhavin, Denmark, K kirke juleaften Christmas in church', written on the back. The other one says 'Jule after 1969' on the front with a snow sled pulling up to a house by a horse. It's obviously Christmas time. On the back it says 'B&D Kyobenhavin, Denmark, 000/9069, Tit Jul i Prastegdrden, Arrival of Christmas Guests' I think. Odd letter hard to decipher. Can anyone help me? Would be greatly appreciated. Heather
[oldplate   01/05/2009]
A. These are christmas plates produced by Bing & Grondahl, Copenhagen, Denmark. There is a different picture for each year. Hope that helps. J.

Q. Can anyone tell me the origin of DOMAY ceramics?
[trevordog94   24/04/2009]
A. Domay was the name given to a line of slipcast ware designed by Dorothy Hope in the 1950s and mainly sold through David Jones. She employed a small staff to do the casting and fettling but found the administration dull work, so she wrapped up the business in 1962 and left Sydney to set up her Thrumster Village Pottery near Port Macquarie. This is from her biography, Impressions in Clay, published in 1990.

Q. Hi I have a Guy Boyd wall plate with native flowers on it which I picked up just because I liked it with no idea who the maker was. Any idea of value. Cheers Leeanne
[ochre1992   19/04/2009]
A. Guy Boyd wildflower items seem to be collected by many people and make good money on ebay. Depending on size and candition they seem to range from aroung $20 for a pin dish with a very simple design such as tea tree, up to over $100 for larger plates of for bunches of mixed flowers. Nice item to own

Q. I just found a small vase , signed H McHugh Tasmania, and numbered 34. Does anyone know much about the numbering system used by McHugh?
[grubduck   04/04/2009]
A. I've been collecting McHugh pottery for about 3 years now and have seen pieces numbered up to 67, of those i'd have examples of 57 of them. I also have pieces that don't carry a number. Number 34 is as far as i know a sugar bowl, about 8.5 cm tall, straight sided tapering at top and slightly rounded at base. 7cm dia at top, about 9cm at base, it should have a lid with a small rounded ball shaped handle on top about 15mm diameter, hope this helps

Q. The difference between hollyhock and foxglove green pottery
[ware   16/03/2009]
A. hi there there is no difference just some people call it foxglove and some call it hollyhocks its the same carlton ware pattern that came in yellow and green colours produced in the early 1940's
[lfb511   20/09/2010]
A. all that i know is the foxglove carlton ware pottery design as i have one yellow jug for sale on ebay at the moment
[cactusmike   15/10/2009]
A. With regard to the embossed wares - there is no difference between 'hollyhock' or 'foxglove' except the name. The factory referred to this pattern as Foxglove in their original records, but it has been called a few thing by collectors / sellers over the time. There are also other patterns which feature foxglove flowers. These aren't part of the embossed ranges, and were produced earlier than these.

[floss   27/01/2009]
A. Hi, Many Aynsley patterns don't have names. There should be a number underneath the pieces. If it has a name, you might find it by looking for the number on www.replacements.com - go to China section, and select Aynsley, John (check your spelling). There are also two guides on ebay http://reviews.ebay.com.au/Guide-to-dating-Aynsley-china_W0QQugidZ10000000003871196 http://reviews.ebay.com.au/Aynsley-China-buyers-and-sellers-guide_W0QQugidZ10000000001132917 where you can find some more information.

[Robert   11/09/2008]
A. Royal Winton was made in England and I believe they are now making some new chintz pieces in the old patterns. The "Red Roof" pattern I collect is no longer made - I believe production ceased in the early 1950's.

[geoffisaac30   08/02/2008]

Q. Is Martyn Boyd and Guy Boyd the same person?
[geoffisaac30   07/02/2008]
A. Martin was Guy's uncle, not his brother.
[cerambler   09/09/2008]
A. Martin was a writer not a potter. Guy set up the Martin Boyd Pottery in Sydney with partners Norma and Leonard Flegg in 1946. He transferred his interest in the pottery to Leonard’s brother Ronald in 1951 and went back to Melbourne where he ran a new pottery, the Guy Boyd Pottery, from 1952-1964. Meanwhile the Fleggs continued to operate the Martin Boyd Pottery in Sydney until 1963.
[cerambler   13/07/2008]
A. No They are different people. (brothers)
