Q. Hi, my name is Emma Smith and I am trying to find out information for my mum who has a Kalmar piece that I can not find any comparison too at all. She has a wall hanging set consisting of three flying seagulls with Kalmar FS, 1, 2 and 3 stamped on the bottom. I have managed to find out that Irene Kalmar was the artist and who the Kalmar’s were. I have also found a number of examples on the internet but nothing like my mum has. Any information would be greatly appreciated. My mum has been having trouble tracking down any information about her particular piece.

Q. KOALA pottery.Has anyone heard of it,I have uploaded a pic in what is this section.I can;t seem to upload pics to my collection though.I maybe doing something wrong
[Roses 06/08/2011]
| A. Hi,
Koala pottery is from Sydney and started in 1944 to about 1963 according to Geoff Ford's book on Australian pottery.
Mr Kerslake set up the pottery and they had a range of logo's from a round blue ink stamp to a gum leaf shape with light blue ink on dark blue paper. Later on they also inscribed directly onto the items which range from slip case vases, troughs, lamp bases and pots. Some early ones were spray decorated with abstract designs. The one I own is a lamp base with a shape the same as Diana Ware in tans and greens from the 1950's or so with a gum leave sticker.
cheers, grottypots. |

Q. Hi, I have two (different) Gondola shaped vases by Kalmar which have been dripped glazed (I think). They are both hand signed in gold on the bottom, one says "To 9 hand painted Irene Kalmar" the other says "To 9 Hand painted J Kalmar. Both have gold in the glazing one more extensive than the other. Can anyone help with supplying more info on them e.g. date and value etc? I know they are circa 1950's but not much else. Could these be early pieces made by the original principals?

Q. Hi there. I have inherited a large Beswick 1940s vase, but somebody has painted it with white house paint! Is there a safe way of removing the coat of paint and restoring the vase to its former glory without damaging the vase??
[rosegarden56 03/05/2009]
A. Hi, whether your paint is oil or acrylic soaking in hot water will soften it and enable you to peel or rub it off. A little good quality dishwashing detergent in the water should help. After removing what you can this way stubborn paint - if acrylic - will respond to Methylated Spirits, and neat eucalyptus oil mixed with a little meths may aid removal of residual oil paint - depending on what vintage the oil paint is. Good luck from Cossii
[Cossii 08/09/2009]
A. Hi Cooka here, I have had a similar problem with a glazed vase and solved it by first soaking the vase overnight in water. I then gently rubbed the paint away with a MILD scourer dipped in soapy water to which I added a few drops of eucalyptus oil. It takes patience. The paint was acrylic based. If your vase has matt/pitted surface and/or the paint is oil based this method may not work. Good luck.
